About Tinahely

A Brief Historical:

The area surrounding Tinahely has been inhabited for centuries, with evidence of ancient settlements and religious sites dating back to early Christian times. In the 18th century Tinahely emerged as a bustling market town facilitated by its strategic location on the crossroads of three counties (Wicklow, Carlow, and Wexford). The village in the 1798 Rebellion against British rule played a significant role, witnessing both rebel activity and subsequent reprisals. The surrounding hills and valleys provided refuge for rebels, and the village itself was burned down during the conflict.

Tinahely Today:

Despite the setbacks of the rebellion, Tinahely was rebuilt and continued to thrive in the 19th and 20th centuries. The town’s characterful architecture, including the restored Courthouse (now an arts center), reflects this period of renewal. Complementing its small size, Tinahely boasts a strong sense of community, with numerous local businesses, active clubs and organisations. A strong connection to its agricultural roots has been kept alive by hosting the annual Tinahely Agricultural Show.
